How Michaels Came to Be
Michael Wilson has been in the restaurant business since his early teens. He has worked each and every aspect of the kitchen to learn the ropes.
After formal training at Washburne in Illinois he moved on to become a chef. Most notably he rose to the rank of corporate chef of the renowned Morton’s of Chicago Steakhouse
Melanie got her degree in Speech Communications and Public Relations from the University of Maryland, spending many years in the restaurant business and briefly in advertising agency, she moved to Palm Beach where she met Michael who had been working out of the Morton’s in Palm Beach. They shared a love of the business and for Key West’s laid-back island lifestyle.
Melanie & Michael moved to Key West’s island paradise in January of 1996 hoping to open a restaurant of their own. In usual Key West fashion they worked several jobs to reach that goal. Sloppy Joe’s, Ocean Key House, Duffy’s, Hard Rock Cafe & Camille’s to name a few. In addition they operated a catering business! It was through this catering business that they met business partners Anna Maria & Maurizio Mancioli and the dream became a reality.
Melanie & Michael were married on Higgs Beach in August of 1996.
Soon after Michaels opened its doors for the first time on January 9, 1997 at 532 Margaret Street. Previous home to Key West haunts like Blackwell’s Stopover, Curly’s Sandcastle & The Compass Rose, Michaels now sits nestled on a quiet residential street. Visitors and locals alike venture away from Duval to find Michaels’ garden oasis!
For 16 years they have been and island favorite and they look forward to many more wonderful years!
